after the interviews right, i realise that many of you seem to think that the job of the ASL is just to "assist the SL". actually that's not true. ASLs are NOT chosen to ASLs cos they are not good enough to be SLs. in fact, the ASLs are chosen to be ASLs cos they are VERY SUITABLE for the job. and comparing SLs and ASLs is unfair. it's like comparing apples and oranges, you don't get anywhere cos they are both important, just that they play different roles in the sections.

SLs and ASLs are both equally important in a section. to me, when i choose SL and ASL, i don't choose the SL first and think, "now i'll just put someone else into ASL cos that someone else is not good enough to be SL." NO, instead, i choose the ASL cos he/she's more suitable to be an ASL. SLs are there to lead the section, be it in terms of music or section spirit or what. ASLs on the other hand, play another role, an equally important role, by being the one to tell the SL when he/she is going too far(eg too bossy/never look into the interest of the members). SLs are there to lead, but usually, they have too much things to juggle at the same time to really remember the little things that happen in the section. they probably don't remember who just went through a rough time or what(not saying that this happens all the time), cos they have to organise everything. this is when the ASL come in. the ASL is usually closer to individual members in the section, and can tell when the SL has gone too far or what. he/she will then feedback to the SL. so in general, SL are in charge of leading, while the ASL is there to ensure that the plans put forward by the SL goes with the members. without the ASL, SLs have to rely on/hope that their members will dare to tell them that their plans are not suitable for the section. members are usually too scared of the SLs to tell them this. or they simply think that they should just listen to their SLs cos that's what the SL is there for. but with an ASL, this won't happen. cos you know, SLs are still human and they(we) make mistakes. ASLs are there to make sure we don't carry on with the mistakes and mislead the section.

if you've managed to get through that long chuck of a paragraph, congrats.

basically, i hope that members will realise that your ASLs are JUST AS IMPORTANT as your SLs and treat them with equal respect.
